Trent Alexander-Arnold’s substitute appearance against Arsenal sparked unprecedented and ugly scenes at Anfield. Here's how it felt inside the ground.
On the way to Anfield, I was beaming at the prospect of welcoming Liverpool onto the field as Champions for the first time in my life. On the way out I was left wondering how I’d just witnessed a Liverpool player, a Liverpudlian no-less, being loudly booed his own supporters every time he touched the ball. Yeah, that was a first too.
How is this where we’re at? Hostile and divided just two weeks after the best day many of us ever had at the match. For a while Liverpool vs Arsenal had been an extension of that wild title party, as we lorded our dominance over the closest rival and a deluded manager who’d sought to diminish our success, while laughably crowning his team the best in Europe. Alright then, let’s have a look at what you could’ve won, Arsenal!
By the end of this 2-2 draw, the joy and unity of a fortnight ago was gone. A day that had been all about basking in being twenty times Champions of England, had become one of the sadder Anfield experiences I’d been part of. And it was all so avoidable too.
